본드 에스테이트(Bond Estates)는 미국 캘리포니아 컬트 와인의 선두로 손꼽히는 할란 이스테이트(Harlan Estate)에서부터 시작됐다. 할란 이스테이트를 소유하고 있는 윌리엄 할란(William Harlan)은 자신의 포도밭이 없어 나파 밸리 전역에 있는 60명 이상의 최고 경작자로부터 과실을 매입했는데, 시간이 지나면서 이 포도밭들 중 몇몇의 비범함을 알게 되었고, 이들을 싱글 빈야드이면서도 하나의 상위 컨셉으로 융화되는 새로운 브랜드를 만들기로 결심한다.

긴 시간이 흐른 뒤 그는 마침내 “하나의 철학, 하나의 설비, 하나의 상표”의 목표 하에 나파 밸리의 그랑 크뤼를 정의할 잠재력을 지닌 포도원을 찾아내어 마침내 '본드' 라는 브랜드를 탄생시켰다. 매트리아크(Matriarch)는 본드의 Melbury, Quella, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus 5개 빈야드에서 나온 포도를 블렌딩하여 만든 와인이다.

This year's Matriarch is very similar to Harlan Estate in structure, and in some ways, a superior wine, or at least more delicious now. Shows the most beautiful black currant, cedar, blueberry pie and Asian spice flavors. What makes the structure so gorgeous are the firm tannins. Ultimately, it's a refined, exquisite red wine. Hard to imagine a better one for drinking over the next decade, and just shows that price sometimes has no relationship to quality. (May 2009)
